Only a tiny number of users have access to the Templates feature right now
Instagram is exploring a new feature called Templates after experimenting with the Top and Reels sections. As the name implies, the functionality will assist users in making new videos using existing Instagram videos in the same format. Instagram is also investigating the option for creators to construct a reel using an existing Template from another short video on the site, according to a Meta representative. The feature is currently being tested with a small group of users before being made available to all users.
According to a report from Insider, Instagram is testing a new feature called Templates that would allow creators to produce Reels by borrowing formats from existing films on the network (via TechCrunch). The feature appears to be comparable to TikTok’s own templates tool, which allows users to drag and drop their own footage into pre-made sequences.
Alessandro Paluzzi, a reverse engineer, discovered an early version of Templates in January, and marketing manager and influencer Josephine Hill has already tried it out. Users can substitute their own video into preset frames and add their own music, according to a screenshot released by Hill in March. This might eliminate the need for users to rely on third-party templates from sites like Canva or to carefully follow online tutorials in order to attain a precise format, as Hill pointed out to Insider.
In a response to Insider, a Meta spokeswoman said, “We are continually exploring on new methods to make Reels simpler to build.” “We’re putting it to the test to see if you can construct a reel out of an existing Template from another reel.” Instagram has confirmed to Insider that the feature is currently being tested with a select number of users. The Verge reached out to Instagram for comment but did not receive a response right away.
The trial comes as Instagram tries to entice more creators to Reels while also addressing one of the platform’s major issues: TikTok reposts. Instagram said last year that it will cease promoting Reels with TikTok watermarks, and Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri announced earlier this week that the platform would be cracking down even further by downranking reposts. By include templates in the mix, it may become easier to create videos on Reels and encourage the creation of more creative material.
